The Okara police arrested today on 10th December
Khushi Mohammed, the president of Anjaman Mozareen Punjab (Tenants
Association Punjab) from Lahore. He was returning to his district
Okara after participation in a massive rally of the peasants on
the international human rights day. Over 2,000 participated in the
rally demanding land ownership rights to the tenants. This was
first big rally in Lahore by the peasants.
An immediate sit in on the spot of the arrest in front of a police
station started by over 100 political activists and peasants. For
over three hours they blocked the main road and ignored all the
threats of the police to arrest them all. This forced the Lahore
police to lodge a report against the police of Okara district for
taking an illegal action without the knowledge of the local
The day was marked by a convention organized by AMP at a local
theater hall. Police in different areas of Punjab was not able to
stop peasants to attend this rally despite all efforts. The AMP
leadership vowed to continue their struggle for the ownership
rights of the government owned agricultural farms in different
district of PunjabFor over 100 years. The leaders of Labour Party
Pakistan, Peoples Rights Movement, and Mazdoor Kissan party and
different social organizations spoke at the convention to lend
their support for the movement.
After the convention, a rally was brought out from Mahfil theater
hall to the General Post office on main Mall road of Lahore. The
demonstrators were chanting slogans like, down with American
imperialism, ownership or death, release the arrested peasant
leaders, land to the tillers and we shall overcome someday. They
were blocked near GPO by the police. A delegation of prominent
civil society organization went to deliver a petition to the chief
justice of Lahore High Court.
On the way back from the rally, the plain cloth police officers
arrested Khushi Mohammed, the newly elected president of the AMP.
