Karachi Gears Up

Protest against the emergency has been getting momentum in the city. Today three events were held in connection with the growing movement against military rule.

Two days consultation of representatives of 37 leftist, progressive, nationalist and democratic parties and groups, lawyers’ community, trade unions, professional bodies, writers, and human right activists ended today at PILER office with adoption of unanimous resolution against the emergency.

A press conference of left wing political parties along with representative of civil society’s organizations and trade unions held in Karachi Press Club to inform the press about the out come of the two days consultations. The press conference was addressed by Akhter Hussain Advocate (National Workers Party), Jam Saqi (PPP), Nasir Mansoor (Labour Party Pakistan), Taj Marri (Inqalabi Jamohri Workers Committee), Yousuf Khattak (Muzdoor Mahaz Amal), Latif Mughal (people’s Labour Bureau) and Karamat Ali (PILER).

A vibrant protest demo was held at “Forum Mall” in Clifton area, attended by dozens of political, social, trade union and human right activists chanting slogans against the military rule with pro democracy banners and ply- cards in their hands. The demo was attended by members of Aurat Foundation, Shirtakgah, HRCP, Labour Party Pakistan, Communist Mazdoor Kisan Party, Socialist International, Hosala and numbers of other organizations.
