LPP Alongwith Leftist Parties to Boycott Elections
BY: Farooq Tariq

LAHORE: Awami Jamhoori Tehreek (AJT) on Tuesday announced unconditional boycott of the upcoming elections even if the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) decides to participate in the elections.

The announcement was made in a press conference by the leaders of the AJT, six left-wing parties – the Labour Party, the National Workers Party, the Awami Tehreek, Sindh; Pakistan Mazdoor Mahaz, Pakistan Mazdoor Kissan Party, the Inqilabi Workers Committee.

Advocate Abid Hassan Minto chaired the press conference at his office.

“Taking part in the elections under present circumstances is unacceptable,” Mr Abid said, “As soon as the APDM departs from the democratic movement, we will separate ourselves from them.” He said the arrival of Benazir Bhutto and the Sharifs in the country had expedited political activities. He said the steps taken by General (r) Pervez Musharraf after November 2 were “unconstitutional”. He said, “Musharraf will no longer be a president if the political parties boycott the elections.

He said he had met with Benazir Bhutto on Monday to agree her to boycott the elections. He said Benazir had not made any decision so far.

He said, “We will hold a rally in Lahore on December 9. On December 25 we will again protest in Islamabad.”

The AJT leaders demanded General (r) Musharraf restore the judiciary and pre-November 2 position. Elahi Bakhsh and Farooq Tariq also addressed the conference.
