The Lahore peace demo

Over 2000 demonstrated here in Lahore on 15th February against Bush and Blair policies on Iraq. Anti War Committee organized the demo in coordination with the rest of the world. It was four times bigger gathering than that of 18th January demonstration. The march started from Buthtiar Labour Ha1l and ended at Lohari gate as planned. Despite a lot of police presence, there was no interference by the police to stop the ra1ly. The demonstrators were chanting slogans against imperia1ist aggression and in favor of Iraqi people. Almost ha1f of the participants were women. Thanks to Women Action Forum, who postponed their planned ra1ly of 20th February and joined with AWCP.

Earlier speaking in a press conference, the leaders of Women Action Forum, Hina Jilani, Neelum Hussain, Sammena Rehman forma1ly announced to participate in the ra1ly and declared their full support to build an anti war movement in Pakistan. They said we do not want to go hand in hand with the religious fanatics. Our movement must have an independent progressive identity.

Labour Party Pakistan, Nationa1 Workers Party, Pakistan Peoples Party Shaheed Bhutto, Jamhoori Amn Party, Pakistan Workers Confederation, Women Workers Help Line, Women Workers Organization, Joint Action Committee for Peoples Rights and other organizationís activists took active part in the ra1ly.

At the end speakers included Ginwa Bhutto, Hina Jilani, Abid Hasan Minto, Farukh Suhail Goindi, Farooq Tariq, Qureshai Ha1fiz, Nisar Safdar, Rubina Jameel and Khursheed Ahmed wowed to continue the struggle for peace a1nd spoke against those who are supporting the American and UK imperia1ism war efforts against Iraq.
